Colombia’s public prosecutor begins drive against TV piracy

Colombia’s national TV authority wants 2016 to be a key year in tackling piracy and is partnering with the public prosecutor to improve the judicial tools against these practices.
tvp webWith piracy costing over $100 million per year in taxes to the state, the Autoridad National de Televisión (ANTV) intends to strengthen the fight against illegal pay-TV providers.
ANTV has announced the initial steps of a strong partnership with the public attorney’s office, starting with a training day for the civil servants working at the country’s copyright unit, during which current legal frames and technical issues will be discussed.
In addition, ANTV is to assign one of its technical workers to help this anti-piracy unit during several operations which are schedule during the coming months.
ANTV will also continue investigating pay-TV providers to determine whether services are offered legally or not. Indeed, latest estimates show nearly three million TV subscriptions (out of 7.9 million households in the country) are provided by illegal operators.
